SWOC Spring meeting 2017
The Spring 2017 SWOC meeting was held on the 28th April 2017 at the Headland Hotel, Fistral Beach, Newquay.
Our host Mike Butler gave us a historical introduction to Newquay and the hotel itself, famously featured in ‘The Witches’ film.
Consultant Foot and Ankle Surgeon James Calder (Fortius Clinic) gave a cutting edge lecture on the current management of Achilles tendon injuries and tendinopathies. Steroid injections may soon be a treatment of the past!
Local GP Penny Atkinson, team physician for the Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby team during the London 2012 Paralympic games, delivered a refreshingly non-politically correct insight into the world of wheelchair rugby and the Olympic village.
A busy scientific programme included 26 trainee papers covering the range of orthopaedics including vertebroplasty outcomes, percutaneous fixation for lateral malleoli non-unions and dual mobility cups for fractured neck of femurs.
The prize for best paper went to Toby Jennison with his topical paper on Fixation versus Revision for Vanouver B2 periprosthetic fractures. This was a retrospective review of 49 patients over a 7 year period all treated at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. No significant difference was found in union rates, with lower operative time, length of stay and time to surgery in the fixation group.
Debate will no doubt continue as the number of these fractures increase.
Following requests from myself I am pleased to announce that the prize winning abstract will be published in the RCS Annals.
Post- meeting drinks were held on the glorious beach-front terrace of the hotel followed by a black-tie dinner.
Our president Tony Ward gave an informal speech at dinner and festivities continued late into the evening.
This was a well attended meeting but attendance from colleagues and trainees in the Severn region was limited. Renewed efforts have been made to try and boost attendance of the Spring meeting from our Severn colleagues as we look forward to Barnstaple 2018.
Thanks go to Mike Butler and Sean Dixon for organising a great scientific meeting with generous industry sponsorship.
Dr Penny Atkinson gave us an entertaining insight into paraolympic wheelchair rugby at London 2012
