Barnstable 13th May 2011
The Spring meeting was hosted by Nick Treble and his colleagues from North Devon Hospital in the very pleasant surroundings of the High Bullen Hotel and Country Club on 13th May 2011.
A guest lecture was given by Roger Atkins (Bristol) on the Development and interpretation of NICE guidance on VTE prophylaxis. Roger started working with NICE after the original guidelines were published in 2007, ensuring that the orthopaedic surgical community has had a much stronger voice in more recent updates. He emphasized that the NICE guidance was to perform an appropriate risk assessment for VTE and discuss the options with the patient, and does not oblige surgeons to use chemical thromboprophylaxis.
During breaks, delegates were invited to test their swing in the golf driving simulator. The longest drive competition was won by Ali Phillips, who also won the prize for the best paper.
Dinner was held in the hotel.
