Tony and his Bristol colleagues hosted our spring 2012 meeting at the Clifton Pavilion,
overlooking Bristol Zoo Gardens.

The meeting was well-attended with surgeons from around the region, including South Wales.

29 papers were presented, using a new 4 minute format, giving more time for questions and discussion, with the prize awarded to Mike Parry for his presentation on Blood metal ion levels and chromosomal aberrations in MoM hips (receiving his prize from SWOC President David Bracey):

Dr Ben Walton (an anaesthetist who is Trauma Network Lead at North Bristol Trust) gave an invited presentation on “The Major Trauma System in the South West – how it works”:

and Alan Gibson gave us the benefit of his expertise on “Exercise leg pain – Diagnosis, investigation and management” (pictured with Ian Winson and Tony Ward):

The day was concluded by presentations from the two Bluespier Prize finalists: Francis Brooks (from Mike McCarthy’s Cardiff team) on “Setting up a metastatic spinal cord compression database” and Al-Amin Kassam (from Veronica Conboy’s Torbay team) on “Return of function and external rotation post proximal humerus fracture fixation with neutral rotation brace”. The consultant members present voted for the winner, favouring the Cardiff presentation in a close vote, and Francis was duly awarded the inaugural SWOC Bluespier prize:

The business meeting reviewed the SWOC accounts, discussed the continuing involvement of the University of Bristol in the Pridie Memorial Lecture, and approved the new shorter-presentation paper format.

Dinner was held at the Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel.
