The Autumn 2014 meeting was held at the new pavilion at the Gloucestershire County Cricket Ground, just off the Gloucester Road in Bristol. It was hosted by Richard Baker and colleagues from Southmead Hospital, with significant organisational support from trainee Felicity Pease.
27 papers from 10 centres were presented over 4 sessions, with the prize for best paper awarded to James Berstock from Bristol for his meta-analysis papers on surgical approaches in hip and knee surgery.
The Kenneth Pridie Memorial Lecture was delivered by Dr Olivier Borens (pictured below with Richard Baker) from Lausanne (who kindly dropped in on his way back from China!), titled “10 errors not to commit when you’re dealing with an infected joint arthroplasty”.
Other guest lectures were from Prof Ashley Blom (“National Joint Registry update”) and Mr Mike Kelly, who presented controversial trauma patients for discussion after the meeting had adjourned to the upstairs bar which had views not only over the cricket ground, but also (in the fading gloom) into the bedrooms of the flats opposite!
The Club dinner was held at Berwick Lodge where we witnessed the official handover of the Presidential medal of office (recently rediscovered at the bottom of a drawer) firstly from Chris Curwen to David Bracey, then from David to Tony Ward who is now in post as SWOC President.
