The South West Orthopaedic Club met on Friday 14th June in blustery sunshine at this historic fortified castle which sits on a former tidal island which is now firmly connected to St Peter Port. The turnout was slightly reduced by the strong winds which caused last minute travel cancellations for the intrepid members who had planned to arrive by yacht from Cornwall and Devon, but those who made it were treated to a thoroughly enjoyable day.

21 free papers were presented by speakers from around the region, with the best paper adjudged to be from Mike Regan’s team – “Revising the revision rate – is Dr Foster’s data accurate?” – presented by Dr Alex Dryden.

Oliver Schindler, currently a locum consultant in Guernsey, gave an excellent guest lecture on his special interest subject – “Current concepts in cartilage regeneration”, and Ranjan Vhadra presented on “Regulation in medical device manufacture” from his personal experience with developing and marketing his vibrating Tenease device.

After the close of the scientific meeting, we were shown around Castle Cornet by local guide Annette Henry who delighted us with her theatrical history telling of the role played by the castle throughout 800 years of Anglo-French conflict:

The tour ended with Andy Murphy being placed into a device from which prisoners would be hung until dead (and long after), from which he unfortunately managed to escape:

An unexpected appearance from the Plymouth orthopaedic sea swimming club followed:

The social meeting was held at Christie’s restaurant and continued long into the night for those who had the stamina. Unfortunately the cameraman was adversely affected by chili Sambuca and no photographic record was kept.

The next meeting will be hosted by Matthew Burwell in Bath.
